This is a list of things I am struggling to tackle in my migration to Ubuntu. The list started out pretty long but has been shrinking. That’s good. The downside is that many people (the proverbial “well could my Mom do it”) would not get this far. I don’t want these issues to detract from my overall stance which is “wow, this is pretty darned slick”.
- iTunes
- ./programName to run a program
-
Thumbnails- Solved: View–>View As List (Ctrl+2) or in the upper right corner there is a drop-down
- Shortcut Keys
- You can configure shortcut keys via System–>Preferences–>Shortcut Keys
- Still could use some work to set the defaults to Windows
Sound: still no sound via my SoundMAX card- Solved with the help of the Ubuntu forums. I’m still not sure which part of the help worked (messing with the UI to make sure nothing was muted or “Put “options snd-hda-intel position_fix=1 model=3stack” to “/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base“.” but whatever the case, this morning I can listen to the music from my SMB share and have subscribed to a podcast too. Next up, messing around with the iPod.
- Visual Studio:this is a very nice tool for someone whose web site is built with ASP.NET. For other uses I am working to convert to MonoDevelop and trying out HTML editors like Screem.
- Startup scripts: I know these exist. I just can’t find any docs on writing one. On Windows I could easily write a batch file (*.bat or *.cmd) and add it to a startup group. I am sure this exists in Linux as well and it’s only my ignorance stopping me. Of course the documentation says to use System–>Preferences–>Sessions. I tried that and running a basic script doesn’t seem to work.
- Movie Maker: I was surprised not to see this offered in Add/Remove but I assume something akin to Windows Movie Maker is out there.
