Sharper

Focus on a sharper life every day

I was waiting for my wife and it was getting late in the afternoon and hot. Ah ha, what about an iced coffee. I trotted over to the coffee shop, a Starbucks in this case, and stood in line. And I marveled at the fact that there was not a healthy thing to eat in the store. Paleo/primal was right out, not a single item. But even if you eat grains the food is all bleached flour and sugary.

Fine, fine, so don’t eat the food. I order a 16 ounce iced coffee. And I’m asked if I want that “sweetened”. What the hell does that mean? Does that mean sugar? Or some funky chemical? Honey? Who knows. But no, in fact I don’t want it sweetened which catches the server off guard.

I go to pay and am asked, incredulously, no syrup with that?!? They even ring it in differently, no syrup. Price doesn’t change by the way.

I listened to a bunch of other orders like “a creamy sweet drink flavored like coffee but decaf”. Huh? They are pushing something called a Refresher right now, looks like a slushee for grown-ups.

Folks, Starbucks may once have been a coffee company but right now it serves upscale slurpees and junk food. It’s 7-11 with better music. And people love it. And slurp it up and then wonder why their pants no longer fit.
