Today I received an email from Klout alerting me that a friend had connected to Klout. Okay, I logged in to see it. And as I looked around a few things started bugging me: Why are these numbers meaningful? Would I really hire someone or contact them based on a Klout score? The more networks I connect, the higher my score. So the more I am a gadfly without much substance, the more my score goes up? Not sure about that. Finally check out the photo. One of the people in that photo runs online programs for the BBC. 33% of my score. Another is one of the most connected, influential people I know, also 33% of my score.  Put that all together, include the fact that I am now stuffed with social networks and emails from them all that yes, I opted out of my account. Maybe I’ll be back someday when the algorithms are better or the cost/benefit of linking all of my real, useful networks is better.
